Das Glasperlenspiel. Versuch einer Lebensbeschreibung des Magister Ludi Josef Knecht samt Knechts hinterlassenen Schriften.

First edition of Hermann Hesse's Das Glasperlenspiel ¹

Hermann HesseHermann Karl Hesse, 1877–1962

First edition. 2 vols., complete. 8vo, pp. 451, [1]; 441, [1]. Publisher's pale blue cloth, stamped in gilt and black to spines, gilt devices to backstrips and upper boards; top edges stained reddish-brown. In the original printed dust-jackets. The latter, moderately browned and a tad soiled to spines, else a superb, fresh set. Still in the original, complete carton slipcase, browned and foxed in places. The rare first printing on heavy paper due to paper shortages during the war.
Hesse won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946, and it was this complex, futuristic utopia, over which he laboured for more than a decade, which the Nobel Committee cited in making the award.
