First printing of this edition published by arrangement with Harcourt Brace & Company, which originally brought out this translation in 1977. First American edition published by Atheneum in 1965, in a translation by Isabel Quigly. Originally published in Turin on 9th of February 1962 under the title Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini by Giulio Einaudi editore.
Winner of the 1962 Viareggio Prize. A haunting, elegiac novel centring on a wealthy, insular Jewish family in the ducal town of Ferrara in pre-war Fascist Italy, as Mussolini's racial laws are being enacted. Vittorio de Sica's justly celebrated 1970 film adaptation, starring Lino Capolicchio, Dominique Sanda and Helmut Berger, won the Best Foreign-Language Film Academy Award in 1972. Additionaly, in 1971 it was awarded the Golden Bear at the 21st Berlin International Film Festival.
