Since its relaunch in 1979 as a magazine of "new writing", Granta has published many of the world's finest writers tackling some of the planet's most important subjects in fictional, reportage, and photographic essay form. Bill Buford, editor for its first 16 years of its new incarnation, was succeeded by Ian Jack from 1995 until 2007 when the magazine's circulation hit 50,000. Currently being edited out of its New York offices by John Freeman with a controlling interest by publisher Sigrid Rausing of Tetra Pack fame.
