Translated by Norman Thomas di Giovanni (bar a single poem translated by John Updike), from the definitive Spanish language text and in collaboration with the author. In Note on the Translation di Giovanni notes that the Spanish original has been modified (including the title poem) as a result of the close reading demanded by the act of translation. First published the preceding year in New York by E.P. Dutton & Co. Originally published in 1969 as Elogio de la sombra, by Emecé Editores, S.A., Buenos Aires.
