First UK edition. 8vo. Pp. [x], 275, [1 blank]. Brick red cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. In the yellow Gollancz dustwrapper, printed in red and black. 'New Volume of Stories,' preceded by the US edition published a year earlier by Harper & Row.
Former ownership inscription to front paste-down. Price sticker to front dustwrapper flap. Light soiling to dustwrapper panels, edge-worn to extremities, else Fine.
Author's fifth collection of stories, originally published over more than a decade in The New Yorker. Includes "The Swimmer" (first conceived as a novel, with approximately 150 pages assembled), the basis for the 1968 film starring Burt Lancaster, directed by Frank Perry and Sydney Pollack (uncredited). Cheever was a frequent visitor to the set in Westport, Connecticut, and makes a cameo appearance in the movie.
