A meditation on a road-trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories the author undertook in 1997 on the occasion of his 50th birthday which neatly coincided with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel. The resulting play written to be performed by the playwright himself, premiered on September 3rd 1998 at the Duke of York's in the West End by the Royal Court Theatre. Its Broadway transfer to the Booth Theatre on the 18th of March 1999, bestowed on Hare the 1999 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance.
Accompanying Via Dolorosa is the 1996 Eric Symes Abbot Memorial Lecture – When Shall We Live? – given at Westminster Abbey, which also addresses questions of art and faith. It attracted record correspondence when an abridged version was published in the Daily Telegraph.
