Winner of the 1993 Guardian Fiction Prize. The second volume in Barker's 'Regeneration' trilogy, about British soldiers traumatized by World War I trench warfare and the methods employed by psychiatrist William Rivers (a historical figure), to treat them. Regeneration (1991), the first volume in the series, was made into a film by Gillies MacKinnon in 1997, starring Jonathan Pryce and James Wilby.
