Dark blue cloth boards lettered and ruled in gilt to spine, double blind-ruled border and publisher's device within a rule in blind to front cover; fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Published 27 October 1932 at $2.50. 1/2,000 copies printed. There were second and third impressions of 1,500 copies each in November and December 1932. Published as The Common Reader. Second Series, by the Hogarth Press in England.
Lacking the scarce, Vanessa Bell designed dustwrapper. Slightly dulled to backstrip, dust-soiled and spotted to upper edge, else Fine.
Woolf's second collection of "unprofessional" critical essays with subjects ranging from Robinson Crusoe, De Quincey, Mary Wollstonecraft and Thomas Hardy, most reprinted from periodicals but some appearing here in print for the first time. Includes 'The Niece Of An Earl', 'Beau Brummell', 'Dr. Burney's Evening Party' and 'How Should One Read A Book'.
