A blend of autobiography and fiction, published posthumously on the author's birth centennial, The African Book – as Hemingway himself called it – is based on a 1953–54 East African safari he undertook with his fourth wife, Mary. In the 1970s, she donated the unfinished manuscript to the John F. Kennedy Library. It was released to Hemingway's son, Patrick, in the mid-1990s, who edited the work to half its original length. "A major literary event... a new window into the tantalizing, unsettling, oceanic world of his experimental, unfinished late work." –David Gates, Newsweek
