Dirty Havana Trilogy

First edition in English of Pedro Juan Gutiérrez's Dirty Havana Trilogy

Pedro Juan Gutiérrez; translated by Natasha Wimmer

First edition in English. 8vo. Pp. [iv], 392. Publisher's pictorial card wraps. With dustwrapper in French flaps and cover photo by Miguel Rio Branco / Magnum.
Translated from the Spanish by Natasha Wimmer (PEN Translation Prize-winner in 2009). Banned in his native Cuba, it was originally published under the title Trilogía sucia de la Habana by Editorial Anagrama, Barcelona, in 1998.
The semi-autobiographical, picaresque adventures of a disillusioned Cuban journalist, living a hand-to-mouth existence in the crumbling old city of Havana, while indulging himself with women, marijuana and rum. An exponent of 'Cuban dirty realism', Gutiérrez tells the stories of the Cuban underclass in a direct, visceral style, brimming with joie de vivre. "Grotesquely compelling... Pedro Juan Gutiérrez appears destined to become a cult writer." Times Literary Supplement
