Three poems. A late-flowering, widely anthologised poet who gave voice to the "chronically ignored," such as cleaners, hospital patients and common folk caught up in momentous events, "the strangeness of other people" became her life's subject. As the first woman nominee (1995) for the post of Oxford Professor of Poetry and in 1999 a contender for poet laureate, Fanthorpe was made CBE in 2001, while in 2003 she was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry.
