The Irish novelist's moving memoir of growing up in 1950s Dublin as the child of an Irish father and a German mother, trapped in a war of identity and language. A follow-up volume, The Sailor in the Wardrobe, was published in 2006. It was titled The Harbor Boys for the U.S. market.
