The first volume of the Avalon series written by Paxson alone, following Marion Zimmer Bradley's death in 1999 and focusing on a group of refugees from the lost continent of Atlantis who settle in Britain. It draws on elements from the latter's earlier novel, The Fall of Atlantis (1987) and in story chronology terms is the earliest book of the series. Bradley was posthumously awarded the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement in 2000, although her reputation has since been marred by her daughter's accusations of childhood sexual abuse.
"An elegant stylist, Paxson captures the awe, tragedy and resounding mystery of ancient Britain and mist-enshrouded Atlantis." –Publishers Weekly
