With a singular exception, the twenty-one stories collected here, and set in the Ireland of Brennan's youth, were first published in The New Yorker, America's pre-eminent forum for serious journalism and fiction. The odd-one out, 'The Poor Men and Women,' was published in the April 1952 issue of Harper's Bazaar.
