Callimachus was the leading poet and scholar at the court of Ptolemy II in Alexandria. The present volume contains verse translations of all the epigrams and four of the six extant hymns of the poet, with Greek text, introductory comments and notes. Robert (Robin) Allason Furness (1883–1954) spent his entire working life in Egypt, first as a civil servant and subsequently as a lecturer at the King Fuad I University of Cairo, followed by a stint at the local branch of the British Council.
