Smilla's Sense of Snow

First US edition of Peter Høeg's Smilla's Sense of Snow

Peter Høeg; translated by Tiina Nunnally

First US edition. 8vo. Pp. [vi], 453, [5 (blank)]. Quarter-bound black cloth over blue paper-covered boards, lettered in silver to spine. Map-illustrated endpapers. Published in Britain as Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow under Tiina Nunnally's pen name of F. David, following textual disagreements with the publisher: "Ms Nunnally chose to take her name off our [the Harvill] edition as we made a number of changes to it which were agreed with the author and his Danish publishers, but the translator did not accept them all." First published in Denmark in 1992 as Frøken Smillas fornemmelse for Sne.
Høeg's third novel, but the first to appear in English. Winner of the 1994 Crime Writers' Association Silver Dagger Award, the 1994 Dilys Award presented by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association, and an Edgar Award nominee for Best Novel in the same year. Named the 1993 Best Book of the Year by both TIME and Entertainment Weekly.
Smilla Jaspersen, half Danish, half Greenlander, investigates the suspicious fall of a small Inuit boy off the roof of her Copenhagen apartment building. The book that kick-started the world-wide fascination with Nordic noir, spending twenty-six weeks on the New York Times best-seller list. Filmed in 1997 by Bille August with Julia Ormond, Gabriel Byrne, Richard Harris, Jim Broadbent, Robert Loggia, and Vanessa Redgrave in starring roles. "A dark, taut, compelling story, it's a real find." Publishers Weekly
