Robert Lowell's "rather politicized" translation of Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound, first produced at the Yale School of Drama in 1967. Asked to participate in a White House Festival of the Arts by President Johnson in 1965, Lowell declined, just as he had refused to serve in the U.S. army when called upon to do so in 1943; an offence for which he served a five-month federal prison term. With the Vietnam War raging, he actively participated in anti-war protests, such as the 1967 March on the Pentagon, and aided Senator Eugene McCarthy's bid for the 1968 Presidential election.
