Glottal Stop. 101 Poems.

First edition of Paul Celan's Glottal Stop. 101 Poems.

Paul Celan; translated by Heather McHugh and Nikolai Popov

First edition. 8vo. Pp. xviii-[xx], 147, [1 (blank)]. Quarter-bound navy blue cloth over stippled cream paper-covered boards, lettered in gilt to spine; matching endpapers. Cover art featuring Mindy Weisel's oil on paper Ovens (1979), from her Holocaust series. With Notes, Index of Titles and First Lines. Translated from the German by Nikolai Popov and Heather McHugh. Selections from the author's Gesammelte Werke (1983), and Eingedunkelt und Gedichte aus dem Umkreis von Eingedunkelt (1991), both by Suhrkamp Verlag, Frankfurt-am-Main.
Winner of the inaugural 2001 Griffin International Prize for Poetry. The judges commented, "Paul Celan is arguably the most important European poet of the twentieth century, but much of his work has seemed too hermetic, linguistically complex, and bound to his struggle with the German language in the aftermath of the Shoah to be translatable. In Glottal Stop, however, Heather McHugh and Nikolai Popov have achieved the seemingly impossible: more than translating Celan into English, they have found a way to translate English into Celan."
